Piles

What are piles or haemorrhoids?

Swollen and inflamed veins in the rectum and anus that cause discomfort and bleeding. Haemorrhoids are usually caused by straining during bowel movements, obesity or pregnancy.

What are the symptoms?

Typically patients present with itching or irritation in the anal region with or without severe pain or discomfort. Some patients present with swelling around the anus with or without bleeding.

What are the treatment options?

Treatment depends on the patient complaints. Mild cases can be treated conservatively with medications. Moderate to severe complaints needs surgery. Surgical approaches include conventional open excision of the haemorrhoids or by using a laser probe or by using stapling devices to reducing the pain to a considerable extent along with a shorter post surgery recovery period.
